Head Coach, George Lennon, was delighted to host the event and was even more pleased to see 36 pupils,16 girls and 20 boys taking part from Lowton High as he has spent several days over the last 3 months buillding up relations with the school, intoducing and coaching table tennis to every pupil in year 7 and 8. .
Fifteen teams competed and Lowton High School were able to enter 9 of the 4 a-side teams, 4 girls teams and 5 boys teams with the remaining teams coming from Birchwood, Fred Longworth and Golbourne schools.
The PE teachers from the visiting competing schools and the Schools Sport Co-ordinator, Lesley McGreevy were all very impressed with the facilities and management provided by Warrington TTC.
Head Coach, George would like to thank volunteer Geoff Pye who helped set up 17 tables across the sports hall and to all the PE staff from Lowton High School, Miss Hill and Mr Hayes for helping to ensure the games kept on moving in the time allocated. The matches were very well organised and ran to schedule with some great planning and teamwork culminating with Lesley McGreevy compiling the results.
The Lowton High School Girls teams finished in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and secured a clean sweep of the medals. Meanwhile the boys first team from Lowton finished runners up to Fred Longworth School. All the pupils who took part thoroughly enjoyed the event and for some it was their first time competing at table tennis. The top teams will now compete with schools from the West side of the borough, with the winning teams going forward to represent Wigan Schools in the Manchester Winter Schools Games.
Head Coach, George Lennon has been working with local schools to Warrington TTC to develop interest in table tennis and an after school Club will be launching at Lowton High School every Thursday from 25th February. The aim is to get more pupils playing table tennis and as a consequence, see more pupils and their families joining Warrington TTC.
Following the success of the schools competition, Wigan Council have already approached the club with future opportunities of working together in the local area to develop our club and table tennis in schools.
