Plastic drinks bottles - are they dangerous?

More and more people are becoming concerned with the use and reuse of disposable plastic drinks bottles and are switching to using stainless steel.
Some bottled drinks products have tested positive for contamination from potentially harmful chemicals and the cause may be the plastic bottles used for the packaging. Bisphenol-a (BPA), a plastic toxin and other potentially harmful material, can leach from the bottle into the drink.
Of particular concern to those regularly participating in sports is that evidence suggests that the leaching is more likely to occur when disposable drinks bottles are repeatedly reused rather than being disposed of after one use, as the plastic degrades further with repeated use.
Stainless steel drinks containers are starting to feature in more sports clubs because stainless steel is inert. Although care is required to be sure they are actually stainless steel and not aluminium, which use plastic liners!
