Wins against Halton, the the pre-match league leaders, Wirral New Ferry, Wigan and Formby helped the Warrington team to secure the league title by just one point in the closest junior league in recent years and all the more remarkable as Warrington's team is the youngest team to win the junior league, with an average age of just thirteen.
Going into the final match-day of the season, Warrington was two points behind Halton and needed to win all of its matches and hope that Halton would drop points somewhere along the way. In the end, a series of convincing victories, including a 4-2 victory over the Halton team, ensured it would be Warrington's title to lose as the day progressed.
Callum Allman, David Eden, James Chappell, Daniel Clarke: youngest-ever junior league champions |
Following injury to David Eden who had performed well all season, Callum Allman was called up and helped the team with two crucial wins against Formby. Earlier, James Chappell and Daniel Clarke had both come back from being two games down, facing almost certain defeat, to turn matches around for the team. "These were the kind's of matches that could have gone either way, but today everything went our way," explained Head Coach Sue Harper, who added: "We have the youngest team in the division, with three thirteen-year old and one twelve year-old players, so this is a particularly special achievement for Warrington Table Tennis Club. They have set a record that I expect will stand for many years.
